Taking Your Poetry Out of the Closet and into the World

Make 2008 your year for establishing a submissions system that gets your poetry in the public eye. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about the seven habits of widely published poets. They will be supported in developing their own personal action plans that align their poetry with the publications and contests where they are most likely to get noticed. Participants will learn how to identify the right publications, contests, prizes and residencies for their work and much more.

Willamette Writers Conference

Sunday, August 3
3:00-4:15

From Flabby To Firm: Toning Your  Poetry For Power And Precision

Revision is not a four-letter word! In this interactive workshop Sage Cohen will offer a high-level review of revision strategies that can be employed to make a good poem great. We will consider a few sample poems in detail to practice identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement. Students should each bring a poem of their own, which they will practice revising together through a series of exercises.
Level: Beginning/Intermediate
Format: Presentation, Exercises, Q & A
Bring: A Poem of your own

Poetry for the People: An email class with Sage Cohen

Starting October 3, 2007, I'll be teaching Poetry for the People through Writers on the Rise, where I am Managing Editor and a monthly contributor. Won't you come out and play? Here's the official info:

Have you always wanted to write a poem but didn’t know how to begin? Maybe you’re already writing poetry and want to connect with your muse more often, or brush up on your poetic prowess? Poetry for the People takes poetry off of its academic pedestal, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Poetry for the People will introduce new ways of expressing yourself in poetry and appreciating the poetry you read. Each week’s lesson will include a mix of:

  • Inspiration: sample, published poems that illustrate the topic of the week
  • Craft tips: simple instruction about image, sound, rhythm, metaphor, etc.
  • Exercises: process and content prompts to get you writing
  • Publication ideas: tips about how and where to submit your work for publication

You’ll be inspired (but not required) to write a poem a day!

Weekly assignments include a poem and check-in. At weeks three and six, you’ll provide brief feedback about classmates’ work. Personal attention from the instructor is offered throughout the class in the form of questions answered for the entire class, just like a traditional, “live” class. Two detailed reviews of your poems-in-progress are included at weeks three and six. You choose one of your pieces for an instructor critique each time. Because of the high volume of student productivity, the instructor does not critique each and every student submission, but does share them with the entire class.

Timing:  October 3 - November 14, 2007

Duration: Six lessons with six assignments completed in six weeks

Prerequisites:

This class is for people at any level of poetry writing experience. You must be able to receive and create Microsoft Word documents to participate. The instructor will send a personal introduction request form after your registration is confirmed, and a class evaluation when the class is complete.

Class Limit: 20 students

Cost: $175.00 (This is a one-time, discounted rate. Future classes will cost $199. Don’t miss your chance to save!)

Class Materials:

On the start date of class, you will receive class materials via email from your instructor. Students will provide a jpg photo/headshot and a one-paragraph intro about who you are as a writer the week prior to the class start date. This is a voluntary, fun way to “meet” your classmates.
